Remember when you were about to buy something, but had to handle some important stuff and forgot what you were looking for?
That’s a common mistake most businesses make that costs them a lot of sales.
Similarly, you might have also had the experience where you looked at a particular product but didn’t complete the purchase and their ads started following you everywhere forcing you to buy.
That’s retargeting working its magic. Let me elaborate.
Fucked up Attention Spans
Like anything in life, there’s no light without the dark.
Problem with the modern technology as useful and helpful as it may be is that it has undoubtedly messed up people's attention spans.
We jump from one thing to another like we do in a circus, which makes it hard to keep our attention.
This is also reflected when we try to buy something online making it harder to keep people’s attention.
Now, the modern technology also has a solution to this problem. It’s called retargeting.
Before we go into that we need to understand that customers don’t buy randomly from you.
There’s a process they go through before they buy.
Here’s the rough process for almost every product or service:
Prospect becomes aware of the problem or need.
Prospect decides to do something about it.
Prospect looks up possible options and solutions.
Prospect picks an option and checks out different suppliers.
Prospect buys from a supplier.
Why would we even care about this stuff?
Because the sooner you can get a prospect to go through these stages while you are in their faces the higher the chances of converting them into a customer and the less it costs you to make a sale.
Think about it.
If you find them at stage 5 it mostly means they’re just price shopping. You’re entering the race late.
Ideally, you want to get to them in stage 3. They start looking for solutions and BOOM, there you are.
The good news? If you’re doing marketing right and following the advice in this blog, there’s already a good chance that they’re finding you in stage 3.
The bad news? The average attention span of a prospect is horrendous and the chances of them remembering you later on after they click away are dreadful.
That’s where retargeting comes into play.
Instead of showing people the same ad over and over and over again, we’re going to do something else.
Instead, we’re going to show them new information and content they haven’t seen before. Maybe we record three, four, or five videos, each highlighting something crucial that your prospect needs to know. Useful info that helps them through the process.
Then we retarget the people who saw our ads before, showing them new information, and helping them out long before money changes hands.
As an example, I’ll tell you about my own experience I had just last week:
I noticed that I was having brain fog a lot, making it hard to concentrate. I went into research mode and stumbled upon lion's mane……..won’t go into too much detail.
In short, I found a brand that is quite well-known for mushroom products.
But, I was a bit hesitant to buy cause I knew very little about it…………..didn't buy it at the time.
Before you know it their ads were all over Instagram, google…you name it. They took the same approach I mentioned earlier, all their ads were completely different to one other.
A few hours later, after looking into it I ended up buying from them. That was just me, Imagine what it can do to tens and thousands of people.
That’s how powerful it is if you get this right. You won’t need to "hard close" anyone—they’ll already think highly of you because you've been there for them from the beginning.
For now, try and experiment with retargeting and see how it works out for you.
